Bunions

What are Bunions?

A bunion is a common condition characterised by a hard lump at the base joint of your big toe. This is accompanied by the big toe leaning towards the smaller toes.

Causes of Bunions

The exact cause of bunions is unknown, but they can often run in the family. Tight fitting footwear, may not be the cause as some people wear such footwear and never develop bunions. However, tight fitting footwear may speed up the development of a bunion, and may make the pain worse. Conversely, bunions may develop even in those who wear proper fitting footwear.

Treatment for Bunions

There are treatments which may decrease the pain and splints that can be worn that may slow down the progression of a bunion. However, if all of these have failed to make a difference, and a bunion is very painful and affecting the quality of life, it may be wise to consider bunion surgery.
