Thickened Nails

Thickened Nails

Thickened nails, are a very common condition seen in clinic. On some occasions there may be some discolouration in the nail, signifying that there may be a fungal nail infection, which will need treatment if the aim is to get rid of the infection. The thickness can make nail-cutting quite a challenge for the patient, and if neglected, the nail can end up rubbing against the shoe, causing increased discomfort and pain. In some cases, the nail might even take on a deformed, curled appearance, resembling a ram’s horn.

Causes

Although a fungal infection is a common cause of thickened toenails, there are other factors responsible for thickened toenails, including but not limited to, psoriasis, significant trauma and poorly fitting footwear (microtrauma)

Treatment

Treatment involves reducing the nail thickness, and if necessary, providing guidance on suitable footwear. Oftentimes, thickened nails are permanent and so treatment will be required at intervals to maintain the shape and appearance of the nail, and in some cases to keep them comfortable. In some cases, patients may want a permanent solution, and opt for nail surgery to permanently remove the nail. The clinic can also provide this service.
