Flat Feet
Flat Feet
Flat feet, also known as pes planus, pes planovalgus, or fallen arches, refer to conditions characterized by low arches in the feet. In this state, the entire sole either makes full or near-complete contact with the ground. While some individuals with flat feet experience no pain, others may feel discomfort in the feet or even in the leg joints during walking.
Causes
Flat feet can be present at birth (congenital) or develop later due to factors like trauma, arthritis, or certain neurological conditions such as poliomyelitis and cerebral palsy. Additionally, flat feet often coexist with other foot conditions like metatarsalgia, plantar fasciitis, and an abnormal gait.
Treatment
Treatment varies based on the presence of pain and the underlying cause of flat feet. For asymptomatic individuals, no treatment may be necessary. However, those experiencing discomfort may benefit from prescription orthotics. In more severe cases, surgical intervention might be considered.
