Hammer Toes

what are hammer ties

This condition is characterised by a downward curling of the affected toe. The joint between the toe and the foot bends backwards (or upwards), and the middle toe joint bends forward (or downwards) resulting in the toe having a hammer-like appearance. This condition can at times be particularly painful if the consequential rubbing of the toes against the front part of the shoe leads to the development of corns on the upper surface of the toe.

Causes

Ill-fitting shoes that that cause the toes to forcefully squeeze against the front of the shoe, preventing them from lying flat, are the primary cause of hammer toes. In some cases, genetics plays a role in the cause of hammer toes.

Treatment

Initial consideration should be given to making sure shoes are comfortable. Advice may be given on splints and shields that can be worn, creams and topical medication that may be helpful. Removal of any hard skin build-up may be necessary to reduce discomfort it may cause. If the deformity is progressing and the pain persists, the opinion of a podiatric surgeon may be helpful.
